The Lithuanian folksongs

In the 19^th century, the Lithuanian folk traditions attracted the attention of many European scholars and a series of ethnographic and linguistic journeys to Lithuania were undertaken by prominent personalities with the goal of collecting Lithuanian folksongs (dainos). Among those who embarked on such expeditions to Lithuania are three of the main linguists of the century, August Schleicher (1852), Karl Brugmann (1880) and Ferdinand de Saussure (1880). The first collection of Lithuanian dainos was published in 1825 by Ludwig Rhesa, professor at the University of Königsberg, followed by Georg Nesselmann (1853), August Schleicher (1857), Anatanas Juška (1880-1882), Karl Brugmann and August Leskien (1882), among many others. This tradition, which was probably one of the earliest forms of linguistic field research in Europe, continued unabated during the 20^th century, with the result that the Lithuanian dainos are now recognized as a national treasure of enduring value and were included in the List of World Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.

The main purpose of this conference is to explain why the Lithuanian dainos raised so much interest since the 19^th century both for linguists and for social anthropologists specialized in popular and folk culture. The vision of Lithuania in the romantic conceptions shared by many European scholars in the 19^th century may partly explain the initial development of this craze for the Lithuanian dainos, but does not allow to understand its perpetuation until the present day. This conference, bringing together experts on the Lithuanian folksongs and the Lithuanian language and culture, aims at contributing to a better understanding of the significance of the Lithuanian dainos in their linguistic and historical context.

Les chansons populaires lituaniennes (dainos) : leur signification linguistique et historique

Au XIX^e siècle, les traditions populaires de la Lituanie attirèrent l’attention de nombreux savants européens, et plusieurs personnalités de premier plan entreprirent une série de voyages ethnographiques et linguistiques en Lituanie dans le but d’y collecter des chansons populaires (dainos). Au nombre de ceux qui effectuèrent de telles expéditions en Lituanie se trouvent trois des linguistes les plus importants du siècle, August Schleicher (1852), Karl Brugmann (1880) et Ferdinand de Saussure (1880). Le premier recueil de dainos lituaniennes fut publié en 1825 par Ludwig Rhesa, professeur à l’Université de Königsberg ; il fut suivi par Georg Nesselmann (1853), August Schleicher (1857), Anatanas Juška (1880-1882), Karl Brugmann et August Leskien (1882), entre autres. Cette tradition, qui représente probablement l’une des premières formes de recherche linguistique de terrain en Europe, s’est prolongée avec la même intensité au XX^e siècle, au point que les dainos lituaniennes sont maintenant reconnues comme un trésor national d’une valeur exceptionnelle et ont été inclues dans la liste du Patrimoine Mondial Immatériel de l’UNESCO.

L’objectif de cette conférence est d’expliquer pourquoi les dainos lituaniennes ont suscité autant d’intérêt depuis le XIX^esiècle à la fois auprès des linguistes et auprès des anthropologues spécialisés dans les cultures populaires. La vision de la Lituanie dans les conceptions romantiques partagées par de nombreux savants européens au XIX^e siècle peut expliquer en partie le développement initial de cet engouement pour les dainos, mais ne permet pas de comprendre sa perpétuation jusqu’à aujourd’hui. Cette conférence, qui rassemble des experts des chansons populaires lituaniennes et des experts de la langue et de la culture lituaniennes, a pour but de contribuer à mieux comprendre la signification des dainos lituaniennes dans leur contexte linguistique et historique.

Lietuvių liaudies dainos : jų lingvistinė ir istorinė reikšmė

XIX amžiuje lietuvų liaudies tradicijos patraukia daugelio Europos mokslininkų dėmesį, daug žymių amenybių, suruošę eilę etnografinių ir lingvistinių ekspedicijų, pradeda keliauti į Lietuvą rinkti liaudies dainų. Tarp jų ir trys svarbiausi to amžiaus  lingvistai: Augustas Schleicheris (1852), Karlas Brugmannas (1880) ir Ferdinandas de Saussure‘as (1880). Pirmąjį lietuviškų dainų rinkinį 1825 metais paskelbė Karaliaučiaus universiteto profesorius Liudvikas Rėza. Vėliau buvo išleisti George‘o Nesselmanno (1853), Augusto Scleicherio (1857), Antano Juškos (1880-1882), Karlo Brugmanno, Augusto Leskyno (1882) ir kitų mokslininkų darbai. Ši tradicija, ko gera, viena pirmųjų lingvistinių tyrimų formų Europoje, atliktų teritoriniu pagrindu, taip pat intensyviai tęsiama ir XX amžiuje. Dabar lietuvių liaudies dainos pripažintos ypatingos reikšmės nacionaline vertybe ir įtrauktos į UNESCO nematerialaus kultūros paveldo sąrašą.

Konferencijoje siekiama patyrinėti, kodėl XIX amžiuje lietuvių liaudies dainomis susidomėjo ir lingvistai, ir liaudies kultūromis besidomintys antropologai. XIX amžiaus mokslininkų sąmonėje įsitvirtinęs romantinis Lietuvos įvaizdis gali dalinai paaiškinti šį ypatingą susidomėjimą dainomis tuo laikotarpiu, bet neleidžia pakankamai suprasti, kodėl toks dėmesys išliko iki šiol. Konferencija, kurioje dalyvauja lietuvių liaudies dainų, kalbos ir kultūros specialistai, skirta įvertinti lietuvių liaudies dainų svarbą jų lingvistiniame ir istoriniame kontekste.
